Trekking Sincholagua

The Sincholagua is an extinct volcano located ca. 17km northeast of Cotopaxi volcano. It has been climbed the first time 1880 by Edward Whymper and the Carrel brothers. Though there is no permanent glacier it is not very often climbed due to the long hike that is necessary to access it. The first day you hike from the Cotopaxi national park to the base of Sincholagua to set up your camp and take advantage of the cold morning the next day to ascent the summit.

Itinerary:

1. Day From the Cotopaxi National Park to the Sincholagua Base Camp
In the morning you drive from Quito southward over the Pan American highway to Machachi from where you enter the eastern highlands of the Andes. Heading South you reach the north boundary of the Cotopaxi National Park. You cross the national park towards the little river Rio Pita where the drive ends and your hike starts. You cross the river and hike up a long slope of Sicholagua. Following its ridge you can enjoy beautiful views on a clear day of the Surrounding volcanoes Pasochoa, Ruminahui and of course the huge Cotopaxi before you reach the base of the volcano in the afternoon. Here you set up your camp, have dinner and spent the night. -/L/D

2. Day Sincholagua Summit – Quito
In the early morning you hike up the ridge just above the camp. Following the U-shaped ridge you reach the main summit in long hike. There are some parts with loose rocks, but during the morning frost they should be frozen together. At the end of the ridge some easy rock climbing brings you up to the top – though sometimes a fix rope can be necessary. On a clear day you can enjoy a spectacular view an the Andes: to Antisana and Cayambe in the north, Ruminahui and the Illinizas in the west and Cotopaxi and Chimborazo in the South. In the east you can see the green of the Amazon rainforest far below you. Later you hike back to the river Rio Pita where your car awaits you and drive back to Quito which you reach in the evening.
