Courses

The Spanish School offers the following courses:

¨Spanish for Travellers¨ Course
This option consists of three distinct course levels; beginner, intermediate and advanced. Before classes can commence students will take an aptitude test to establish their knowledge of Spanish and the test result will decide in which course the student will be placed.

On conclusion of the beginners course students should have the basics with which to survive the gringo trail! After the intermediate course pupils should be able to read and understand Spanish newspapers as well as have basic conversations.
And finally, after the advanced course the pupil should be able to actively participate in general conversations eg politics, sport, culture etc and to be able to express their opinion in good, grammatically correct Spanish.

Each of the courses runs for 4 hours a day over two weeks. Therefore to complete the three levels will take 6 weeks (120 hours).

¨Latin-American Literature¨ Course

This Spanish course consists of 5 lessons in which the pupil will read excerpts from Ecuadorian and Latin American novels and discuss the text with their teacher. This is an excellent course to help practice and improve the students’ pronunciation, as well as test the students’ knowledge of grammar and expand their vocabulary. This course takes one week with 4 hours of Spanish tuition per day, and can be extended according to the pupil’s interests.

¨Intensive course¨

This course is designed for travellers who wish to learn the basics of the Spanish language within a short time span. During this course the pupil will learn the necessary grammar to hold basic discussions as well as useful vocabulary that will be helpful for their onward journey. At 4 hours per day this course takes 10 days (40 hours) to complete.

¨Spanish 2000¨ Course

This course has been created for pupils who wish to practise and deepen their knowledge of the Spanish language. It covers many different subject areas and the course material will be compiled from different language books, in order to ensure a wide range of interpretations for the respective topic. Parts of the course can also be dedicated to a particular area of interest for the student e.g. their hobby or occupation and at the end of the course the student will write a paper on a subject of their choosing. The duration of the course is not fixed and depends on the interests and wishes of the pupil.

¨Topic¨ Course

This course will be completely dedicated to the personal interests of the student. Thus there are special courses for e.g. medics or economic specialists who want to improve their language skills within their field. Equally the course topic could simply be with regard to the students’ hobbies and interests, or orientated towards Ecuador eg the colonial history in Ecuador and/or South America.

Please feel free to contact us if you want any further information, sending details of your topic of interest, and we will be glad to send you the relevant information and organize the course for you.

¨Online¨ Course

This course consists of two stages:
In the first stage the pupil receives the teaching materials via the internet before he starts classes at school. This way he/she can advance their knowledge and become familiar with the teaching materials used, and thus be able to make more rapid progress during the classes. The material contains fundamental vocabulary, simple texts with English translations, grammar notes, self help exercises etc.

In order to receive the teaching materials we need the inscription of the student, their e-mail address as well as a rough estimate of his/hers Spanish knowledge.

The second stage of the course allows students to continue their Spanish study after their course at the school has ended. The course functions as follows; according to the tasks received, the student writes different texts and completes exercises to improve grammar, orthography, sentence construction etc. and then returns these exercises back to the school. The exercises will be corrected by the teacher and then sent back together with some new tasks for the student. The goal is to motivate the student to continue language study, so his/her knowledge doesn’t stagnate but develop and improve even further.

We have to point out that all study materials sent to the student are
legally copyright protected and may not be used in any other way than for the studies of the student it has been sent to.

General information on the courses

Instruction takes place on a one-to-one basis, thus one teacher for each student. Experience demonstrates this system provides the best and fastest results, but when desired group classes can be organized (up to 4 students generally). However, for a group class all students within the group need to have the same knowledge of Spanish. In these cases students may decide how many hours of classes per day they will take, though the recommended is four hours per weekday plus additional homework.
